Aiming for a game design competition for school children

The Innokas Network coordinates the Game it now! -project where a game design competition is developed for basic education. The aim is to create a working model that supports ICT skills and motivates students while also being easy for teachers to introduce into their own teaching. The project is implemented together with Viope Education Oy and teachers and students of the Innokas Network. The teachers participating in the project are from the cities of Lappeenranta, Tampere, Oulu and Kuopio.

Viope is a Finnish e-learning company whose main product is a solution for teaching and learning programming, game design and mathematics. Viope coordinates the annual Game Development World Championships (GDWR) and the Junior track developed in the project is based on this competition.

The game development competition is planned during the academic year 2018-2019. Teachers and students collaborating in the project took part in a pilot competition as part of the Innokas 2019 programming and robotics tournament in Lappeenranta. Based on these experiences the concept is developed further and during 2019-2020 the competition will be launched and opened to all basic education students. The aim is to get the game development competition as part of the annual Innokas programming and robotics tournament that has traditionally focused on robotics competitions. You can follow the project in the Innokas blog.
