New project opens up the world of artificial intelligence to children and young people

In the two-year Let’s Explore Artificial Intelligence project, funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, children and young people are introduced to the world of artificial intelligence together with researchers and experts. The project focuses on inspiring children and young people to examine artificial intelligence from the perspective of science and research, as well as on children’s participation and the importance of children’s rights in the development and use of digital technology.

The project explores artificial intelligence as a science in a way that inspires and engages children and young people. Artificial intelligence is examined as a tool, a subject of learning, and a phenomenon from the perspective of social impact and opportunities for influence. Students explore artificial intelligence in collaboration with teachers, artificial intelligence researchers involved in the project, Professor Pekka Mertala (University of Jyväskylä), Postdoctoral Researcher Janne Fagerlund (University of Jyväskylä), and Senior University Lecturer Tiina Korhonen (University of Helsinki), as well as experts from the Innokas network.

Five fifth-grade teachers and their students from Lappeenranta, Oulu, Turku, and the eNorssi network are participating in the development phase of the project. The project is coordinated by Leenu Juurola, project manager of the Innokas network at the University of Helsinki.
