The Scratch, Micro:bit, Lego robotics and artificial intelligence – digital ways of working -training starts in September

The Scratch, Micro:bit, Lego robotics and artificial intelligence – digital ways of working -training introduces you to the practical use of various digital tools in the teaching of programming and computational thinking, as well as in invention projects that apply these skills. The training starts with a joint introductory webinar, after which the pedagogical use of different technologies is introduced in practical, remote theme-workshops and follow-up supplementary meetings, i.e. clinics.

During the training, it is also possible to participate in the distance learning classes of the EU Code Week together with your own students. The training includes online learning material aimed at teachers, which deepens the discussed themes and offers more ideas for practicing digital skills with your own class.

The training is funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education and is free of charge. It is carried out remotely in its entirety. Municipalities/schools are responsible for substitute teachers’ costs.

Target group

Basic education class and subject teachers

Content and structure

The training consists of three sections: 1) Basics of digital pedagogy – introductory webinar, 2) Get a handle on digital working methods – webinars and clinics and 3) Digital ways of working in everyday school life – final webinar

Part 1: Basics of digital pedagogy

    • Introductory webinar
      • Time: Wednesday September 6th at 2.30-4.30pm
      • The Basics of digital pedagogy introductory webinar comprehensively presents the digital skills that, according to various guiding documents and studies, should be taught to students. Special attention is paid to the practical utilization of innovative working methods.

Part 2: Get a handle on digital working methods (choose atleast two of the following themes when you register)

    • The many possibilities of Scratch
      • Remote workshop: Tuesday September 26th at 2.30–4.30pm. The many possibilities of Scratch -remote workshop will introduce you to the many possibilities offered by the well-known programming environment Scratch in teaching programming and innovation. The remote workshop covers e.g. utilizing Scratch in learning the principles of artificial intelligence and connecting Scratch to the physical world using a webcam and the Scratch link application.
      • Clinic: Monday October 2nd at 2.30-4.30, In the Many possibilities of Scratch -clinic the participants’ questions about the use of Scratch in different ways are answered and the issues presented in the remote workshop are practiced with the support of the trainers.
    • Micro:bit as a tool for learning

      • Remote workshop: Thursday October 19th at 2.30–4.30pm. The Micro:bit as a tool for learning -remote workshop introduces the Micro:bit microcontroller and its various features as part of teaching programming. Special attention is paid to the use of Micro:bit as part of the learning content of different subjects.
      • Clinic: Wednesday October 25th at 2.30-4.30pm. In the Micro:bit as a tool for learning -clinic the participants’ questions about the different ways of using Micro:bit are answered and the topics presented in the remote workshop are practiced with the support of the trainers.
    • Lego-robotics in teaching programming (EV3 and Lego Education Spike)
      • Remote workshop: Tuesday October 31st at 2.30–4.30pm. In the Lego-robotics in teaching programming -remote workshop you will get to know different ways of using Lego robotics as part of teaching programming. The training also presents projects implemented in practice and offers tips for participating in the Innokas programming and robotics tournament.
      • Clinic: Tuesday November 7th at 2.30–4.30pm. In the Lego-robotics in teaching programming -clinic the participants’ questions about using Lego robots in different ways are answered and the themes presented in the remote workshop are practiced with the support of the trainers.
    • Multidisciplinary maker-projects
      • Remote workshop: Monday November 13th at 2.30–4.30pm. In the Multidisciplinary maker-projects -remote workshop different ways of implementing maker projects and utilizing the innovation process as part of making are presented. The remote workshop introduces several practical ways of working, which can also be used as part of other types of learning projects.
      • Clinic: Thursday November 23rd at 2.30–4.30pm. In the Multidisciplinary maker-project -clinic participants’ questions about the implementation of maker projects are answered and the issues presented in the remote workshop are practiced with the support of trainers.
